This is an interview with Eddie Huang, the chef/owner of BaoHaus NY and host of culinary show "Fresh Off the Boat." In the segment he speaks about growing up in Florida and struggling with his racial identity as a Taiwainese-American amongst all White people. He speaks a lot about the immigrant experience and the troubling positionally of being too American in his ancestral homeland, and being read as a perpetual foreigner in his USA hometown. I'm not endorsing all his viewpoints, I'm just sharing the experience of another Asian American who encourages people to remember and embrace their ethnic identity, but also break societal molds.
Also, the show "Fresh Off the Boat" follows Huang around the world as he engages in a ethnographic adventure and interacts with local cuisine, custom, and people. The video-documentary approach is an example of how technology provides space for ethnic diversity and representation. Overall, i'm sharing this piece to highlight a more casual approach to race consciousness and spreading awareness about intersectional identity.
